Dad surprises Daughter on Fathers Day

The Special Olympics Summer Games delivered an unforgettable weekend of sporting excellence, with more than 1,277 athletes competing across 12 sports. Among the standout performers was Offaly’s Tara Bergin Dwyer, who won two gold medals and a bronze in equestrian events at the Stewarts Care Regional Equine Therapy Hub in Co. Meath. The day was made even more special when Tara was surprised by her father, Terry, on Father’s Day, creating a heart warming moment that captured the spirit of the Games – celebrating not only athletic achievement, but also the families and support networks behind every success.

Equestrian Excellence at the Summer Games

The Special Olympics Summer Games brought a weekend of celebration, pride and unforgettable sporting moments, as athletes from across the country showcased their talent, determination, and dedication.

More than 1,277 athletes competed across 12 sports, cheered on by friends, families, coaches, and supporters as they took to the stage, pool, court and pitches after months of preparation.

The final day of the Games delivered no shortage of inspiration, with standout performances continuing right to the end.

Among those who shone was Tara Bergin Dwyer, from Offaly, who secured two gold medals and one bronze in equestrian events. Riding with confidence and composure, Tara delivered fantastic performances for spectators at the Stewarts Care Regional Equine Therapy Hub, based in Kilcloon, Co. Meath.

For one person watching on, the day carried even greater meaning. Tara’s father, Terry, was there to surprise her on Father’s Day – a moment that made an already special occasion unforgettable.

Beaming with pride, Terry said: 

“I am so proud. There are no words. She didn’t know I was coming today and her face when she saw me. It was the best Father’s Day present ever.”

The Games not only celebrated the talent and commitment showcased by the athletes, but also the relationships, encouragement and support systems that help athletes thrive. The weekend was a powerful reminder of the dedication behind each performance and the pride shared by everyone who helped make it possible.
